CURRENT EXHIBITION

‘The Zen of Painting’
Selections from the Estate of Fred Reichman

May 6 - June 14, 2025

‘For Dick, the Cat is on the Table’, Alkyd on canvas, 1986, 30 by 40 inches.

Fred Reichman, 1925 - 2006 was a major presence in the San Francisco Bay Area
during the early 1960s until his passing. He received his MA in painting at UC Berkeley
under the influence of Mark Rothko and Hans Hofmann.

However it was Reichman’s devotion to Zen poetry and his association
with kindred artists Gordon Onslow Ford and Lee Mullican that released his original voice.

His paintings have been described as visual Haiku poems: transitory
observations of everyday objects and experiences elevated to their
inherent spirituality. Like Haiku Reichman’s paintings are economically composed
and contemplative, divineness in grains of sand.

‘Spring Coming is a Meadow Lark’, Oil on canvas, 1962, 15.25 by 21 inches.

‘The Weight of the Fruit’ , Alkyd on canvas, 1994, 36 by 36 inches.

‘Our New Cat Issa’, 1984. Alkyd on canvas, 24 x 24 inches.
